MFA Set Up Instructions

Use this guide to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) by installing the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smart phone and completing the MFA registration on your computer. 

The Microsoft Authenticator app is a security tool that helps you securely sign in to your SD68 account by providing an additional method to verify your access to an online resource in addition to your password.

The Microsoft Authenticator app is only used to ensure your account security and verify your identity. It is a lightweigt app, free to install, and is not used to track or monitor your activity or provide access to your device.

Prerequisites: To complete MFA registration you will need:

  • An active SD68 account and password. 
  • A smart phone with internet access (Wi-Fi or Data). 
  • A computer with internet access.

Instructions

This guide is set up in multiple parts.

Step 1: Install the authenticator app on your phone. If you already installed the app, skip to Step 2.
Step 2: Register the authenticator method on your computer.
Step 3: Change your default method to the authenticator app.
Step 4: Add an alternate authentication method (text/voice call). 

 

Step 1 - Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone 

  1. On your smartphone, install the Microsoft Authenticator app. The app will be available when searching the Google Play App Store (Android) and the Apple App Store (iPhone).

    Alternatively, you can use your phone to scan the QR codes below:

  2. After installation, open the app

 

Step 2 - Register Microsoft Authenticator on your computer

  1. Open a browser and sign-in to your SD68 account Security Info page at https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo.
  2. Select Add sign-in method.
  3. Select Microsoft Authenticator, and click Add
  4. The next screen will ask you to download the app. This should be completed from Step 1, so click Next. 
  5. On your phone, with the Microsoft Authenticator open, click the + button at the top.  
  6. Select Work or school account.
  7. Select Scan a QR code. You will be prompted to allow the app to access your camera - allow it to do so and scan the code. 
     
  8. On your computer, select Next, and you will see the following screen displaying a QR code:
  9. Scan the QR code with your smartphone camera. 
     
  10. On your computer, Select NextYou will be prompted to "try it out" to make sure everything is working.
  11. Approve the notification you receive on your phone.

    You'll see a notification approved message on your computer:
  12. Select Next to complete the registration. 

 

Step 3: Confirm your Default Authentication Method

To confirm that you are using the Microsoft Authenticator app as your default method for authentication:

  1. Open a browser and sign-in to your SD68 account Security Info page at https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo.
  2. Is Microsoft Authenticator listed as your default sign-in method?
    • Yes? Congrats, you're all set up. 
    • No? Select Change and continue.
       
  3. Choose the App based authentication - notification option.

Congratulations! you are now set up to use the Microsoft Authenticator for MFA. After setup, do not delete the app from your smartphone, as you will receive continued periodic requests to authenticate with the app. If you delete the app, or lose the phone the app is installed on, please contact the IT Helpdesk by submitting a ticket through service68. 

 

Step 4: Add an alternate authentication method 

We recommend registering a secondary MFA method (SMS or voice call) in case the Microsoft Authenticator app is unavailable.

  1. Open a browser and sign-in to your SD68 account Security Info page at https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo.
  2. Click Add sign-in method
  3. Select Phone, choose Receive a Code or Call me.
  4. Enter your phone number and click Next.  
  5. If you chose Receive a code
    1. You will be sent a text message with a code. 
    2. Enter the code within the prompt displayed on your screen, then click Next.
    3. You will receive a notification that the phone was registered successfully.
    4. Click Done, and you'll now be able to use text messages to authenticate your sign-in. 
  6. If you chose Call me: 
    1. You will receive a notification that you will receive a call from Microsoft. 
    2. Listen to the phone call, then press the # key when prompted.
    3. Once complete, you'll be notified that the call was answered and the phone was registered successfully.
